One of the oldest cities in the world ― Ephesus has been settled by people since the Stone Age.
The settlements of primitive people were replaced by the Mycenaeans, Ionians, Cimmerians, Lydians, at the head of the legendary Croesus Tsar, Persians, Romans, Byzantians, Turks-Seljuks, Ottomans... All of them left the unique traces of their cultures, which preserved to the present time in Ephesus. One of the features of this unique city is its almost full safety. Ephesus looks like people have left it just a few years ago, but not like an old city with thousand years of history...
The Adrian Temple and the world's first library (the Library of Celsus), the temple of Artemis, burned by madman Herostratus, church with the tomb of John the Apostle, Turkish baths, the Isa Bey mosque (14th century), and even...an antique bawdy house. But the most important thing in the well preserved Ephesus are the traces of the history of early Christianity.
One of the 7 cities of the Acts of the Apostles, Ephesus shows its guests a church, where there was held the first Ecumenical Council, and the house of the Virgin Mary. Right here, in the little house on the top of a mountain, with the Baptismal pool (1st century A.D.), the mother of Jesus spent her last days...
In Ephesus you will walk through the streets, paved with antique marble. Paul the Apostle used to preach in these streets.
Ephesus, the eastern capital of the Roman Empire, for a lot of centuries has been the cultural center of the antique world, retaining its huge importance in the Middle Ages as well.
