Being the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham, Sanliurfa is the city, revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews. This magnificent historical, architectural and natural monument is known to us as Urfa. The prefix "Sanli" came later. The city of Urfa is known from historical legends, biblical scriptures and chronicles. Being one of the oldest cities in the world(!), Sanliurfa was founded in 10 century BC. It was here where the prophet Abraham and his family lived before they migrated to Palestine, searching for a new land. In addition to the monuments that are directly related to this biblical event, you will see the ancient city, some inscriptions made on the rocks 11,000 years ago, ancient churches and temples... In The Acts of the Apostles the city is called Edessa. It is famous for the sacred lake - the unique natural monument, where Abraham had escaped from his pursuers, and the old fort of several thousand years. Its construction was completed by the new owners of Sanliurfa - the Hittites, Persians, Hephthalites... In the fortress you can see rare mosaics of pre-Christian period and the first images of Amazons. Besides this stunning monument, in Sanliurfa one can enjoy the grand mosque, old coaching inn, caves with uncommon microclimate, remains of Hellenistic cities, and caravanserais.
