Trabzon

The very Trebizond, which became famous as the capital of a small persistent Crusader kingdom, is the actual Trabzon. It is one of the few Turkish towns with the history, connected not with the Mediterranean, but with the Black Sea. The city is located in one of the most beautiful and comfortable places of the coast: near the estuary, at the foot of the mountains and the sea. Together with forests, covering the mountains, all this makes Trabzon a real paradise for the lovers of clean air. Like any resort in Turkey, Trabzon also means great history. It began in the 8th century BC when the ships with Greek travelers sailed here. This is where the Greek mercenaries who fought for the Persians rested, this is where the armies of Alexander of Macedon came. After them the Romans came to Trabzon who made this city the capital of the province, followed by the Goths, Byzantines... Trebizond stood at the junction of the influence of Greek, Georgian, Persian, and Armenian cultures. Local Christian community was founded by Saint Andrew the Apostle himself! Maybe that's why they've built later a temple named as the principal church of Constantinople - Hagia Sophia. Trabzon is famous by the fact that it was the last outpost of the Byzantine Empire, which existed for several years after the fall of Constantinople. All of these tumultuous events have left their mark in the history: the Byzantine city walls, the residence of the Archbishop of  Armenian Church, Greek metropolitan, dozens of ancient Christian churches and fifty grand mosques. An amazing Armenian-Greek-Turkish city, retaining the mysterious atmosphere of the Latin Empire - that's what Trabzon means.
