This is the place which refutes all the stereotypes about Turkey. Stark, beautiful nature. The huge mountain lake with the purest water, which remains untouched since the time of the dinosaurs! Van is a closed lake, where the water supply replenishes only by melted snow from the mountains... What is striking - the water in Lake Van is invariably salty! Yet, there is an ancient legend about the lake, telling that a monster like the one of Loch Ness, supposedly lives in Van. There is an island in the middle of the lake, where an old church, adorned in Armenian style, stands, the church appeared here at the dawn of Christianity in the fourth century. Van is a biblical land. This place was a part of the ancient Armenian kingdom, the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of the Crusaders... The combination of cultures and people gave usual results for Turkey: a large number of historical monuments and unique cultural climate. These northern regions of Turkey are not similar to the well-studied Mediterranean Turkey. So, it will be more interesting to visit the mountains of Van, stand under the dark vaults of the ancient Armenian churches, walk through mountain trails with a guide to abandoned monasteries, where services were held many thousands of years ago... The architecture of this city is much older than the Turkish one as a whole. After all, if the whole Turkey can boast mainly of the monuments of ancient Greece and Rome, then in Van there is the fortress of the kingdom of Urartu era (10 century BC). You can see the splendor of ancient Turkey in the vicinity of Lake Van.
